MCAT: Medical College Admission Test

MCAT is administered 15 times over a year. Though no qualification required to appear for the MCAT. However, candidates willing to write Medical School Admission form shall check with individual colleges what qualification they ask for admission in a particular medical courses. Many college do not accept MCAT Score older than 3 years for admission.

MCAT Test Pattern

MCAT asks Multiple Choice Questions from the following four areas:

Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
  • No of Questions: 59
  • Duration: 95 Minutes
Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
  • No. of Questions: 59
  • Duration: 95 Minutes
Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior
  • No. of Questions: 59
  • Duration: 95 Minutes
Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills
  • No. of Questions: 53
  • Duration: 90 Minutes
Void Questions
  • Duration: 3 Minutes

MCAT Test Duration

  • There is optional break of 10 minutes between sections.Total Time Required to answer all sections: 6 Hours 15 Minutes
  • Total Time Required to be spend at Test Centre: 7 Hours 27 Minutes

MCAT Testing Limits

  • You can book only one MCAT test date at a time.
  • Over a year you cannot write more than 3 MCAT Test
  • Over 2 years you cannot write more than 4 MCAT Test
  • In a lifetime you cannot write more than 7 MCAT Test

MCAT Recruiting Service

AAMC is administering authority to MCAT. You can take part in MCAT Recruiting Service or do away with this. For writing MCAT taking part in MCAT Recruiting Service is not mandatory. However, if you participate, the AAMC will show your details including MCAT Scores to US and Canadian School of Medicine, Osteopathy, Podiatry,  Veterinary Medicine, other health professional programs and the Scholarship programs of the US Government.

MCAT Registration Deadline and Fees

MCAT offers 3 Categories of Registration. Register early to save test fee.

MCAT  Gold Zone Deadline: Price $315. Register 29 days prior to test day.
Benefits: More flexibility on test date and locations. You can cancel registration and get partial refund. Rescheduling is available for a very small fee.

MCAT Silver Zone Deadline: Price $315. Register 15 days prior to test day.
Benefits: You can reschedule exam for an increased fee. In case you cancel the exam no fee will be refunded.

MCAT Bronze Zone Deadline: Price $370. Register 8 days prior to test day.
Benefits: You can cancel test date but no fee will be refunded.

MCAT Score

MCAT Score is valid for a period of 3 years. Though you can show old MCAT Score but many colleges do not an Score older than 3 years.
You will receive test score for individual sections and overall test. There is no negative marking for wrong answers. The Score for individual sections is reported on a scale of 118 (Lowest) to 132 (Highest). Overall MCAT Score is reported on a scale of 472 to 528. Also a percentile rank is reported along with each section and total score. Each year on 1 May Percentile Rank is updated. AAMC releases MCAT Score 30-35 days after the exam day.

MCAT Registration

If you are not a registered member of AAMC, first you need to create a Log In name with AAMC website. For creating login name a valid email id is mandatory.  Next you can use this Log In name and password to register for MCAT. Registration process is simple, Chose Test Date and Location. The computer will ask you certain basic questions. Once all questions in registration form are answered you will need to pay registration fees using your Bank’s Card.
