Education plays a key role in the progress of the country. Department of Education and five Religious Missions are responsible for providing Higher Education in Samoa. Both the government schools and the mission schools have a uniform syllabus and common patterns of examination. The government school system is more popular as almost all the teachers earn Samoan Teachers’ Certificate before joining a Samoan school. Furthermore, the district schools select quality students from villages and educate them through the upper primary level.
Samoa joined UNESCO on April 3, 1981. The country hosts UNESCO’s Cluster Office for the Pacific. Founded in 1983, the UNESCO Apia Office covers 16 Member States and 1 Associate Member in the Pacific.
