Education System in Vanuatu - An Overview

Vanuatu is an island located in the South Pacific Ocean. It comprises of around 83 islands, some of which are inhabited since past ten centuries or more, while many others are still empty. Vanuatu experiences a tropical climate with hot rainy weather and cyclones for most of the year. While three to four months from April to September experiences a cool and dry weather.

Like developed countries education in Vanuatu is not compulsory and not free. Even children in government schools require paying fees. Very few people in Vanuatu attend secondary school and in fewer numbers attend university classes.  At present, many church schools are opening in Vanuatu, as demand for new schools is increasing.

Vanuatu’s education system uses the “2 - 6 - 4 – 3” model (2 years of preschool, 6 years of primary, 4 years of lower secondary, and 3 years of upper secondary) plus post-secondary education. Over 98% of primary schools in Vanuatu are either public schools or government-assisted church schools. The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) manages the education system.
