Higher Education Institutions and Qualifications in Slovenia

In Slovenia, there are both public and private higher education institutions. The public and private higher education institutions are accredited and registered in the Register of higher education institutions at the Ministry for Education, Science and Sports. 

Universities 

Universities in Slovenia are autonomous in the area of education, scientific research and arts. These are multidisciplinary institutions of higher learning that constitutes arts academies, professional colleges and faculties. They offer study programmes at all levels of degree- undergraduate, master’s and doctorate. 

Faculties

  • Faculties in Slovenia carry out scientific research and provide education in the areas related to science. Faculties provide study programmes of at least 2 cycles.
  • Faculties in Slovenia are either part of universities or are independent higher education institutions.

Art Academies

An art academy in Slovenia conducts artistic and educational studies in the areas related to artistic fields. These institutions of higher learning must provide at least 2 cycles of degree- first and second or second and third levels.

Higher Professional Colleges

The higher professional colleges in Slovenia provide training in trades and occupational domains. Some of the professional institutions also perform research. The research can be conducted in collaboration with universities, art academies or faculties, or independently. 

Higher Education Qualifications

Following are the higher education qualification offered in Slovenia:

First Cycle: Bachelor’s Degree

This cycle is of undergraduate studies. Students must hold a secondary school leaving certificate in order to gain admittance into the bachelor’s degree programme in Slovenia higher education institutions. 
  • Duration 3-4 years 
  • ECTS: 180 to 240 credits
Studies in sociology, teacher education and arts take 4 years. At this first cycle, many of the programmes focus on single discipline, but dual discipline studies are also available.

Credential awarded: Upon successful completion of the programme, diplomirani (bachelor’s degree) is awarded. 

Second Cycle: Master’s Degree 

Short-Cycle Master’s

Students must have a bachelor’s degree in order to gain admittance into the master’s degree programme.
  • Duration: 1- 2 years
  • ECTS: 60 to 120 credits (depending upon the area of study)
Students are required to complete the coursework and a master’s dissertation. Also, students are required to defend their master’s dissertation.  

Credential awarded: Upon successful completion of the programme, magister/magistrica with the name of specialty/field of study is awarded. 

Long-Cycle Masters

The long-cycle master’s programmes of 2 types:

6-year programme: Comprises of following fields- dentistry, veterinary medicine and medicine. Upon successful of these programmes, doctor/doktorica is awarded.

5-year programme: Comprises of Pedagogical mathematics, architecture and theology.  Upon successful completion of these programmes, Master (Magister) with specialization mentioned on it is awarded.

Third Cycle: Doctoral Degree

In Slovenia, doctoral studies are offered in many fields.  Students must hold a master’s degree in order to gain admittance into the doctorate study programme. This cycle requires completion of a thesis or a research project.
  • Duration: 2-4 years
  • ECTS: 180 credits
Doctoral studies after a University Diploma last for 4 years. Students who hold a Master’s degree, doctoral studies for them last for 2 years.

Credential: Upon successful completion of the studies, a title doctor znanoski (doctor of science) is awarded.
