Admission Requirements for Higher Education in Slovenia

The admission requirements of higher education institutions in Slovenia vary across institutions. These requirements are there to make sure that you posses the knowledge and skills needed to successfully complete the study programme. Each institution manages its own admission. Read on to know about the admission requirements and procedure for higher education institutions of the Republic of Slovenia.

General Admission Requirements

The basic admission requirement for university undergraduate studies is the Matura (Maturitetno spričevalo) examination. University studies lasts for 4 to 6 years and concludes with a diploma examination. Upon successful completion of the examination, a Diploma with a professional title is awarded to the students. This university diploma enables the students to go for further studies at the post-graduate level or enter the labour market. 

The admission prerequisite for the postgraduate studies leading to a Master’s degree is a university undergraduate degree or an equivalent degree diploma. 

The admission prerequisite for the postgraduate studies leading to a title of Doctor of Science is a Master’s degree or its equivalent. 

Specific Admission Requirements

Some of the study programmes have specific requirements, such as psychophysical ability tests or artistic skill tests. Contact the higher education institution to know about the specific tests and exams to be eligible to apply for the courses of your choice. 

Language Requirements 

Slovenian Language Proficiency 

International students must demonstrate their level of proficiency of Slovenian, generally corresponding to the European Standard B2 level. Submit a Slovenian language proficiency certificate- Certificate of Slovene as a Second Language. 

English Language Proficiency

If the study programme is in English, students are required to demonstrate their level of proficiency in English language. Following English language tests scores are accepted:
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Application Procedure

The application procedure for pupils from EU/EEA countries is same as for Slovenian pupils. These pupils are considered in the quota for Slovenian students. 

International students from non-EU countries are required to get an entry visa before entering Slovenia.  The study places for international students and Slovenian students without the Slovenia citizenship are set additionally.  

Foreign qualifications must be formally recognized by Slovenia. The transcripts of the academic records can be attested at a notary or at a Slovenian embassy. 

Students must fill out an application form and send it along with the required documents to the chosen Slovenian higher education institution. In most of the cases, students can fill out the form online and submit it electronically to the institution. Students can also download the application form from the chosen institution website, fill it completely, take a print out and send it to the institution. 

Pre-enrollment Announcement

The pre-enrolment announcement for institutions of higher learning is generally issued in January.

Documentation

Following documents must be submitted:
  • Application form
  • Educational certificates: Secondary school leaving certificate, bachelor’ degree (for master’s studies), master’s degree (for doctorate studies), and other certificate copies 
  • Language certificates: Slovenian language and/or English language
  • Identification document: Certificate of citizenship or any other valid personal identity card copy
  • A valid copy of your passport
  • Evidence of adequate funds to study in the Republic of Slovenia
  • Recommendation letter: At least 2 recommendation letter from your home educational institution or recent employer
  • Professional experience certificate, if any
  • Research proposal synopsis: For doctoral studies
  • Portfolio of work (for artistic studies)
  • A statement that must include your interests, brief educational history, professional experience (if any), reasons for applying to the study programme and the institution, and your academic and career goals. 
Students must check the higher education institution website for any further documentation required.

Selection Ways and Means

The higher education institution will scrutinize the submitted documentation, will check whether you are eligible for the study programme you applied for and will issue an acceptance letter in case you are accepted.

Dates and Deadlines

As per the Slovenia Higher Education Act, higher education institutions must declare the pre-enrollment dates for undergraduate studies at least 6 months before the commencement of the new academic year; and for graduate studies higher education institutions must declare the date at least 3 months before the commencement of the new academic year.

Generally, there are 3 application dates and deadlines for higher education institutions in Slovenia:
  • From February to March
  • In August
  • In October
