PTE General: Pearson Test of English General

The PTE General is a test to measure English Proficiency of learners of English who are speakers of other languages. PTE General focuses on English communication skills and measures four strength areas Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. This test is not a valid measure for immigration purposes. If you are looking for immigration to an English speaking country and need PTE Score please chose to PTE Academic.  The PTE General is administered by Pearson in partnership with Edexcel Limited.

PTE General Test Level

The PTE General has six levels A1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. All levels are in accordance with Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and accredited by Ofqual in the UK. Website: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/ofqual

Foundation Level

Exam time: 1hr 15 mins
Speaking test: Five mins
Designed to be aligned with CEFR level A1.
This test is for test takers with a beginner knowledge of English, sufficient for survival in social, travel and everyday situations.

PTE General Level  1

Exam time: 1 hr 35 mins
Designed to be aligned with CEFR level A2.
This test is for test takers with basic English communication skills. The test measures whether they would be communicate in day to day in an English settings.

PTE General Level 2

Exam time: 1 hr 35 mins
Designed to be aligned with CEFR level B1.
This test is for test takers with intermediate English for practical use in study, work, travel and other everyday purposes.

PTE General Level 3

Exam time: two hours
Designed to be aligned with CEFR level B2.
This test is for test takers with intermediate English for practical use in study, work, travel and other everyday purposes.

PTE General Level 4

Exam time: two hours, 30 minutes
Designed to be aligned with CEFR level C1.
This test is for test takers who are applying for higher education in an English speaking institution and/or are wishing to demonstrate an advanced level in English for social, academic and vocational purposes.

PTE General Level 5

Designed to be aligned with CEFR level C2
Written test (two hours and 55 minutes)
This test is for test takers who are applying for higher education in an English-speaking institution and/or are wishing to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English for social, academic and professional purposes.

PTE General Test Format

  • The PTE General test consists of two parts: a written paper and a spoken test, and assesses four skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing.
  • The written paper tests listening, reading comprehension and writing skills and is marked by external examiners in the UK.
  • The spoken test is assessed by trained local examiners and is sent to the UK for moderation.
