Education System in Brunei

The Ministry of Education in Brunei is responsible for providing quality Education to children in Brunei. The ministry has the policy of providing a minimum of 12 years of education, which comprises of 7 years of Primary Education and 5 years of Secondary Education. The ministry is also in the process of making Education compulsory to all children.

The Education System in Brunei is focused on Literacy, Numeracy, Sciences, Physical Education, Civics and Moral Education. Further, the country has adopted bilingual policy in 1984 under which students learn two languages namely, Malay and English. School students are also exposed to ICT skills to promote creativity, independent learning and enhance higher order thinking skills.

Students of 1 to 3 years attend Pre- Schools for one year before attending Primary and Upper Primary Schools till 6 years of age. During these years, students majorly learn basic skills of literacy and numeracy in primary classes.

The Secondary Education is based on two levels
  • Lower secondary
  • Upper secondary
Education at the upper secondary level is general in nature with some provision for specialization in science, arts and technical fields. At the end of the second year, high academic achievers appear for the Brunei-Cambridge GCE Ordinary level (GCE ‘O’ Level) examination. The Sultanate of Brunei also has number of Science schools, Sports School, Privately-funded Schools, and Vocational Schools.

Furthermore, the lower secondary level covers 3 years of education at the end of which students appear for the Lower Secondary Assessment or Penilaian Menengah Bawah (PMB) examination.
