Admission Requirements for Higher Education in Barbados

The admission requirements vary depending on the level of study, degree programme and institution. There are many factors being considered while selecting the applicant that fits the university or college. General Admission Requirements

Following are the general entry requirements:
  • Applicant must be 16 years old at the time of enrollment and hold a secondary school leaving certificate.
  • Applicant must have passed an entrance examination- CXC grades
  • Applicant must pass CSEC General Proficiency level at grades 1, 2 and 3.  

Application Procedure

Applicants can apply directly to the higher education institution they wish to study at. Collect the application form from the institution, fill it and submit with the required documents (Certified copies or original documents).

Some of the institutions have an online application system wherein applicant must create a user account, fill out an online application, and confirm it. Once you confirm the application, an email with the filled application is sent to your email id as a PDF attachment. Additionally, you are required to submit the documentation to the Admission office of the institution you’re applying after completing the online application. Original copies along with the photocopies must be submitted to the admission office. 

Applicants can track their application by logging into to their account. 

Documentation

Following documents must be submitted:

birth certificate 

Proof of citizenship: Submit a Barbados identification card. Applicants who are born outside of Barbados must submit proof of their immigration status.

Valid Passport

Academic qualifications/certificates:  GCE, CXC, CAPE, CSEC, High School transcripts

Professional certificate or diplomas

Student health report

police certificate of character (PCC)

Official transcripts and grades

Resume/CV: It should include personal information, academic profile, additional programs (if attended), honors and awards, co-curricular activities, community involvement experience, skills, and at least two references. 

Statement of Purpose: An SOP of about 500 words outlining the reasons for applying for this particular programme/course. Also, mention your professional goals and plans, and how would you use the knowledge and skills gained from this particular degree. 

Research proposal (for PhD studies): A research proposal of 2-3 pages outlining the research area, reasons for research, problems being studied, and the proposed research methodology. 

Entrance Examinations

Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC): The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) is responsible for the provision of secondary school-leaving examinations in Barbados.

Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE)

Students who wish to go for higher education in Barbados must sit for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE).
