TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language is conducted to measure the skills of English Language in an academic setting. TOEFL is designed and managed by Educational Testing Service and it is also a registered trademark of it. In fact, besides universities, many government agencies, businesses, scholarship programs and licensing agencies require TOEFL to judge the skills of their candidates.

With recent advancements, this test has developed to an internet based test, which is the TOEFL iBT format, and thus almost replacing paper based and computer based tests. However, in a few limited areas paper based and computer based tests are still prevalent.

Test Structure

The TOEFL iBT test includes 4 sections, that is, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
  • The Reading section has 3 to 5 passages and each of them consists of 12 to 14 questions.
  • The time duration for this part is approximately 60 to 100 minutes.
  • Listening section has 6 to 9 passages, consisting of 5 to 6 questions each. Time duration is approximately 60 to 90 minutes.
  • The Speaking section consists of 6 tasks with time duration of 20 minutes.
