TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language

TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language is conducted to measure the skills of English Language in an academic setting. TOEFL is designed and managed by Educational Testing Service and it is also a registered trademark of it. This test was basically designed to test the English language of non-native speakers who wish to study at U.S. Therefore, TOEFL is one of the basic requirements to enroll students in higher learning institutes and universities. In fact, besides universities, many government agencies, businesses, scholarship programs and licensing agencies require TOEFL to judge the skills of their candidates.

With recent advancements, this test has developed to an internet based test, which is the TOEFL iBT format, and thus almost replacing paper based and computer based tests. However, in a few limited areas paper based and computer based tests are still prevalent.

Test Structure

The TOEFL iBT test includes 4 sections, that is, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
  • The Reading section has 3 to 5 passages and each of them consists of 12 to 14 questions.
  • The time duration for this part is approximately 60 to 100 minutes.
  • Listening section has 6 to 9 passages, consisting of 5 to 6 questions each. Time duration is approximately 60 to 90 minutes.
  • The Speaking section consists of 6 tasks with time duration of 20 minutes.
  • The Writing section consists of 2 tasks with time duration of 50 minutes.
It is important to note for the students that any one of the sections include some extra questions which are not counted. Thus, making it mandatory for the students to give equal effort to all the sections because one does not know what questions will be counted and what will not.

Test Scores

The TOEFL test is scored on a scale from 0 to 120 points. Each section consists of 0 to 30 points. However, the Speaking and Writing sections initially consists of a range from 0 to 4 and 5 respectively. In the later process the points are then converted on a scale from 0 to 30.
