Delivery Truck Drivers and Driver/Sales Workers play the most important part in pick-up and delivery of goods door to door to businesses and households. They sell or deliver goods, such as food products, including restaurant take-out items, or pick up or deliver items such as commercial laundry; may also take orders, collect payment, or stock merchandise at point of delivery.  The job opportunities are good in this occupation as there are greatest numbers of job openings each year.

Role of Delivery Truck Drivers and Driver/Sales Workers

  • Load and unload their cargo.
  • Drivers make sure their cargo is secure and adjust their mirrors so that both sides of the truck are visible from the driver’s seat.
  • Follow traffic rules.
  • Drive trucks to deliver items such as food, medical supplies, or newspapers.
  • Write customer orders and sales contracts according to company guidelines.
  • Inform regular customers of new products or services and price changes.
  • Record sales or delivery information on daily sales or delivery record.

Skills of Delivery Truck Drivers and Driver/Sales Workers

Customer-service skills: Truck Drivers should have good customer service skills as they often interact with customers.
Hand-eye coordination: Delivery drivers have to observe their surroundings while operating a complex machine so they should have an excellent hand –eye coordination.
Patience: The job requires them to be calm and composed as driving through heavy traffic congestion.
Sales skills: Driver/sales workers are expected to convince customers to purchase new or different products from them.
Communication skills: Drivers have to be able to speak English well enough to read road signs, prepare reports, and communicate with the pubic and law enforcement officials.
Math skills: Delivery truck drivers and driver/sales workers sometimes take payment, they have to be able to count cash and to make change quickly.
Visual ability: To have a driver’s license, delivery truck drivers and driver/sales workers must be able to pass a state vision test.

Work Schedules

Most drivers work full time, and many work additional hours. Those who work on regular routes sometimes must begin work very early in the morning or late at night. Long-distance heavy truck and tractor-trailer drivers spend most of their working time behind the wheel, but may load or unload their cargo after arriving at the final destination. Drivers often work weekends and holidays.
